Chelsea striker Higuain almost quit football for his mum

Chelsea striker Gonzalo Higuain revealed that his mother convinced him not to quit football after she was taken ill in 2016.

The Juventus loanee, who completed his move to Stamford Bridge earlier this week, opened up about the experience of hearing that his mother, Nancy, had been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness while he was on international duty with Argentina at the Copa America.

Higuain did not learn of his mother s condition until after Argentina had lost on penalties to Chile in the final and he told the Mirror that the news left him ready to end his playing career.

I decided immediately that I must stop playing football so that I could look after my mum, said the 31-year-old, who could make his debut against Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup on S…

Allegri not Kean on Moise hype and admits ´he isn´t Ronaldo or Messi´

Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri has attempted to calm the growing hype surrounding Moise Kean by dismissing comparisons with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Kean, 19, scored two goals for Roberto Mancini s Italy in Euro 2020 qualifying wins over Finland and Liechtenstein over the international break.

After becoming the youngest player to score for Italy since Bruno Nicole in 1958 as Italy defeated Finland 2-0 on March 23, the 19-year-old followed that up with a goal in the 6-0 rout of Liechtenstein on Tuesday.

Allegri, however, refused to get carried away with Kean s form ahead of Saturday s visit of Empoli in Serie A.

I don t know who spoke about Moise Kean in a certain way, Allegri told reporters.

Chris Forino wishes ‘education and blessings’ to fan who racially abused him

Wycombe defender Chris Forino has wished “education and blessings” to a fan who he claimed racially abused him during Monday’s League One clash at Blackpool.

Forino reported an offensive remark made during his side’s goalless draw at Bloomfield Road but managed to hold his composure in the moment and in a subsequent social media post.

The 23-year-old wrote on X: “Firstly I want to say to the individual who made the racist remark I wish them nothing but education and blessings to be more open minded, there’s enough hatred in this world already.

“Blackpool and the officials handled the situation excellently so I thank them both.”

Chiellini backs Super League proposal and wants fewer Serie A clubs

Giorgio Chiellini insists a European Super League is needed, and has also suggested the number of teams in Serie A should be reduced.

The controversial proposal for a breakaway Super League, which involved the big six  Premier League sides along with Juvetus, Inter, Milan, Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Barcelona, was announced in April.

After huge criticism from governing bodies and fan groups, the six English teams, plus Inter, Milan and Atleti, withdrew from the agreement.

Barca, Madrid and Juve, however, have stood by the plan, with UEFA s attempts to punish the trio having proved fruitless.

While the majority of players have spoken out against the proposal, Juve captain Chiellini believes it is exactly what European football requires.

Redknapp cleared of tax evasion

Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has been cleared of tax evasion at Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday.

Redknapp and Sheffield Wednesday owner Milan Mandaric were accused of evading tax on payments totalling 189,000 pounds.

Both Redknapp, who managed Portsmouth in two spells from 2002 to 2004, and again from 2005 to 2008, and Mandaric, the Fratton Park side s former owner, denied the charges during the trial at the London court.

They argued the money was given as a gesture of friendship and was not work-related.

Mandaric put the sums of money into Redknapp s offshore bank account while both men were at Portsmouth.

Redknapp and Mandaric were cleared on two charges of cheating the public revenue.

Athletic Bilbao need penalties to end 40-year wait for Copa del Rey glory

Substitute Alex Berenguer ended Athletic Bilbao’s 40-year wait for Copa del Rey glory with the decisive penalty in a shoot-out victory over Real Mallorca.

Raul Garcia, Iker Muniain, Mikel Vesga and Berenguer, who were all introduced from the bench, scored from the spot as keeper Julen Agirrezabala saved from Manu Morianes and Nemanja Radonjic blazed over to hand the Basque club the trophy they last win as part of a league and cup double in 1984.

Oihan Sancet’s 50th-minute strike had earlier cancelled out Dani Rodriguez’s first-half opener at the Estadio Olimpico de la Cartuja in Seville, but neither team could find a winner in 120 minutes of football.

Barca eyeing Mario Gaspar; Valencia keen on Sporting starlet

Barca eyeing Mario Gaspar

that Barcelona are keeping close tabs on Villarreal full-back Mario Gaspar.

The Catalans are preparing for life without Daniel Alves even if they have not given up on trying to persuade the Brazilian to extend his stay.

And with their primary target Danilo Luiz da Silva reportedly agreeing a summer deal with Real Madrid, Barcelona appear to have turned their attention towards Mario Gaspar.

The Villarreal defender has largely impressed ever since the Yellow Submarine returned to the elite division and he is widely regarded as La Liga s best right-back at the moment.

Mario, 24, already has plenty of top flight experience and 25 appearances in European competitions, and it looks as though he might leave EL Madrigal in the …
